For those of you who are SPMU artists, you may perform the manual technique for microblading, or you may prefer the machine technique, or maybe even both. Maybe you use the manual technique, but are thinking of switching to machine. Whatever stage you are at for SPMU, there is always room for knowledge improvement. In today’s blog, we will discuss the difference between manual and machine technique.
SPMU
First off, let’s discuss what SPMU is for those of you who aren’t quite familiar with it. SPMU stands for Semi Permanent Makeup. The name describes exactly what it is. It’s makeup that isn’t 100% permanent like normal tattoos, but it’s semi-permanent so it lasts a lot longer than regular makeup. When SPMU is performed, whether it’s lips, eyeliner, or eyebrows, you are taking a pigment and using a needle, inserting the pigment into the epidermal or outer layer of the skin to a depth of between 0.05-0.09, this then allows the pigment to be easily absorbed. The design is waterproof, smudge proof, and looks completely natural. Results last up to 18 months, after which time the pigment fades leaving the skin.
MANUAL TECHNIQUE
When we use the term “manual technique”, it still applies to eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner. However you are using a blade which is made up of several tiny pins to apply the pigment into the skin. This technique is the original, and for a lot of artists they prefer this method as they feel they have more control over the tool. When using this technique, you have a tool that holds the different blades you use, and then it’s used much like a pen or pencil. You use this tool to carefully scratch the outer surface of the skin while inserting pigment into the skin.Training is highly recommended as you need to be an expert on how to know the perfect depth to insert the pigments. MACHINE TECHNIQUE
Much like the manual technique, the machine technique carefully scratches the surface of the skin and inserts pigment into the skin. The difference is that with this technique, you use a machine that holds a cartridge made up of needles, depending on the style or look you are going for. The different types are 1 Round, 3 Round, 5 Round, 5 Flat, and 7 Flat. There is also a 12 Pin used for mesotherapy. When the machine is turned on, the needles rapidly move up and down and insert the pigment. Why artists choose this technique is because as you can imagine, it can be a lot quicker. It does take more practice, and we definitely recommend taking an official course on how to successfully use the machine, but once you get the technique down your results can be amazing. As you can see, both methods are very similar and achieve much of the same results. It all depends on what you prefer. If you like to have total control over your tool, knowing exactly what the blade is doing, then the Manual Technique might be your best bet. However, if you are confident with using a machine and know that you can get the best results with this quick technique, then the machine method is what you need.
